Pilates is an extremely effective exercise method. It works to improve the strength of the deep abdominals and lower spine; core stability, and improves and targets postural problems, encourages good breathing patterns and corrects whole body alignment of the joints and muscles. For example; by affecting the muscles around the knee or hip, the joint itself can sit in a comfortable way and therefore be less prone to injury or wear and tear.
The beauty of the method is that it can be tailored to fit any person regardless of age or fitness ability, from novice to top sportsman. Joseph Pilates (see history) was a great innovator, a man before his time in terms of how he understood the importance of having strong abdominals that would support the spine. An understanding that came long before anything was really known about this connection.
Pilates exercises can be both gentle and extremely challenging in their intensity. It is, however, important to learn a few of the fundamentals first. As the exercises and technique build with time and experience, the person will discover, perhaps for the first time, an awareness of their own body how they move, sit, stand and walk. As you progress, the exercises can become harder, challenging, strength, balance and coordination.
Catherine Ogilvy-Stuart has been teaching Pilates for over 14 years, firstly qualifying in Matwork with Bodycontrol Pilates and then some years later with Polestar Pilates UK in London on their Comprehensive Studio Training course. In that time it has been a privilege for her to help her clients improve and reach their goals. Not just general fitness levels, strength, and flexibility, but also managing longer-term problems or issues. As the method has evolved, there are now many different styles of Pilates on offer to the public. but one thing remains if you are looking to invest in Pilates, it is important to have a good well-trained teacher who can guide you through the technique.
